A 2005 survey of business process companies operating in Albania found many firms providing complex services to clients outside of the country.

These companies have found that the local workforce, particularly among the graduate population in Tirana, is well able to provide the level of IT and language skills that they need to grow their activities and expand their Albanian operations .

“IT service companies are highly customer focused and able to find innovative solutions to technical problems. We started working with our Albanian supplier on a trial basis but it soon became apparent that they were capable of offering a lot more than we had originally planned. Our ability to lower costs and service clients has improved dramatically as a result.”
MD, OCO Consulting, Consultancy and Software company, Northern Ireland

Much of the Albanian workforce is multi-lingual. 70% of the population speak Italian and 30% speak Greek, while most university graduates are fluent in English. Many of these multilingual Albanians are technically adept as well. In some cases an Albanian-owned firm is contracted to supply services overseas for a foreign client.

“At first our goal was to employ 150 Italian-speaking women. Yet after two years we employed 1,100 people, capable not only to speak good Italian but also to understand and use our sophisticated software in a project to digitalize all the documents of the Italian Cadastre.”
General Manager, INIMA, local sub-contractor with an Italian client
